Winner of the 7th Active House Symposium – UNIPOL Group Headquarters

On 16 and 17 October 2019 the Active House Alliance held its 7th symposium, where experts from all over the world interested in the sustainable construction exchanged ideas and best practices. This is the first time that this international event has come to North America.

During the event, the Active House Label Awards have been organized, where projects submitted to Active House have been evaluated and awarded in the different categories.

The UNIPOL GROUP headquarters has been the finalist for the category PROJECTS WITHOUT RADAR DESIGNED CATEGORY.

The design, which has as architects the Mario Cucinella Architects group, has been developed to host the headquarters of Unipol, thus it is a business construction. The design solution aims to encourage the re-discovery of constant interaction between the users of UNIPOL Group Headquarters and the surrounding climate, empowering them to actively modify their working spaces to increase their comfort levels.

The building massing aims to maximize the building energy efficiency by reducing the overall energy consumption, and covering the resulting demand with renewable sources.

The project focuses a lot of water use and recycle, maximizing landscape and soft paving to increase permeable surfaces to collect rainwater. The water collected is treated and reused for both irrigation and toilet flushing, avoiding significant drinkable water waste.

The Jury motivated its decision to award the project as follows:

“A stunning design of an eco-skyscraper in Milan currently under construction. It embodies many interesting solutions for a different approach to towers in dense cities. Further steps in order to apply Active House radar will be proposed to the designer and contractor.”
